Dear Madam/Sir,
Thank you for your email to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.
The Citizens’ Enquiries Unit has been asked to reply.
President Roberta Metsola is closely following the situation in Iran.
Opening the European Parliament session on 9 March 2026, the President paid tribute to the Iranian people and all victims of the regime, underlining that after decades of suffering, it must be their time.
During the Munich Security Conference 2026, President Metsola stated that it is the time for Iranian regime to end. She once again highlighted that the European Parliament pushed for sanctions and for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to be designated as a terrorist organisation, a move which was eventually accepted by the 27 EU governments on 26 January 2026. She vowed that the European Parliament will keep up the pressure.
On 25 March, President Metsola reiterated that the European Parliament stands with the people of Iran and condemns the regime’s indiscriminate attacks, including on civilians, in the Gulf States and across the region.
The President’s latest declarations on Iran are available on her official X account.
Parliament’s position on the situation in Iran
The European Parliament’s response to the recent violent crackdown on protesters and political dissidents in Iran has been clear.
In a resolution of 12 February 2026, the European Parliament expresses once again solidarity with the Iranian people and reaffirms that they are the sole legitimate source of sovereignty in Iran. It supports the Iranian people who seek freedom and the right to live without Islamist coercion.
Parliament calls on the regime to halt all violence against civilians, stop all executions and end the repression. It demands the release of all persons in arbitrary detention.
Parliament urges the Council and the EU countries to expand targeted sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, and to enforce existing sanctions and prevent circumvention.
Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee is planning to hold an exchange of views with the Iranian democratic opposition. This follows Parliament’s resolution of 22 January, in which it calls for representatives of the Iranian democratic opposition to be invited to the European Parliament, while reiterating that it is up to the Iranian people to determine their future government. Parliament also calls for the different actors in the democratic opposition to work together, paving the way for a just, inclusive and democratic process that succeeds in bringing freedom and dignity to all Iranian citizens.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with the President of the European Parliament. Rest assured that they are taken up in its work.
Yours faithfully,
Citizens’ Enquiries Unit (AskEP)
